Tribute to CIA founder Dondi White (1961–1998) and his historic 1978–1980 'Children of the Grave' whole-car subway masterpieces photographed by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant.

Architects of Mechanical Wildstyle & Subway Letter Evolution
Precision letter architecture and mechanical wildstyle forged in the tunnels of the Bronx.
The Death Squad (TDS) is one of the foundational pillars of New York subway style writing. Led by Part One, Kase 2 ('The King of Style'), Noc 167, Skeme, Revolt, Zephyr, Mare 139, and Chain 3, TDS revolutionized 3D interlocking wildstyle and 'Computer Rock' lettering.
Andrew 'ZEPHYR' Witten is a cornerstone of New York City's original subway movement, painting alongside Dondi White (CIA), Revolt, and Bil-Rock in RTW (Rolling Thunder Writers). Co-author of the definitive biography 'Dondi White: Style Master General', Zephyr helped take NYC subway writing to downtown galleries and across the globe.
Melvin 'NOC 167' Samuels is one of the supreme masters of the New York City subway era. Representing FUA (Future Urban Artists) alongside the late Case 2 and Part One, Noc 167 painted legendary whole-cars across the Bronx IRT lines that defined the visual vocabulary of hip-hop.
Immortalized in the 1983 documentary 'Style Wars', SKEME (The 3-Yard King) was a central pillar of The Magnificent Team (TMT) on the IRT 2 and 5 lines in the Bronx alongside Kade 198, Chain 3, Mare 139, and Fuzz One. His relentless whole-car burners and razor-sharp letter connections remain a benchmark of Golden Era New York subway history.
CHAIN 3 was one of the most prolific and stylistically influential subway writers of New York City's late-1970s and early-1980s Golden Era. Painting alongside Kade 198, Skeme, and Tean 5 in The Magnificent Team (TMT), Chain 3 dominated the IRT 2 and 5 lines with vibrant whole-car burners.

Carlos Rodriguez (MARE 139) rose to prominence on the NYC subway system in the late 1970s and 1980s as a member of The Magnificent Team (TMT) and Crazy Inside Artists (CIA). Celebrated for translating cubist wildstyle letterforms intothree-dimensional metal sculpture, he also designed the iconic BET Award trophy.

Before becoming world-famous as hip-hop's 'Drama King' DJ Kay Slay, Keith Grayson was legendary NYC subway writer DEZ. Featured in the classic 1983 documentary 'Style Wars', Dez was a relentless subway bomber affiliated with TCP and X-Men who remained a lifelong champion of New York graffiti culture.

DR. REVOLT is a founding member of Upper West Side Manhattan's legendary Rolling Thunder Writers (RTW) alongside Zephyr, Bil Rock, Min One, Quik, and Haze. Famous for his psychedelic comic-book Pop sensibility on the Broadway #1 line, Revolt also co-designed the iconic 'Yo! MTV Raps' logo.

Enrique 'PART ONE' Torres began writing in 1974 and became one of the most influential mechanical wildstyle kings of the IRT subway system, leading The Death Squad (TDS) alongside Noc 167, Kase 2, Revolt, and Zephyr.
KASE 2 (Jeff Brown, 1958–2011) was a one-armed Bronx subway genius featured in Style Wars who invented 'Computer Rock' wildstyle and reigned as a supreme architect of The Death Squad (TDS).
PHASE 2 (1955–2019) is universally revered as the Founding Father of modern graffiti style, inventing the 'Softie' bubble letter, arrows, and complex masterpieces on NYC subways.
