183rd Street in Washington Heights—the spark that lit the New York subway movement.

Rooted in Washington Heights and Inwood between 1969 and 1972, the United Writers (UW) and 183rd Street pioneers—Taki 183, Julio 204, Frank 207, Chew 127, Barbara 62, Eva 62, Stay High 149, and Coco 144—turned neighborhood street-number tags into an all-city phenomenon covered by The New York Times in July 1971.
